-----CHAPTER 5-----
REAL TALENT!
It was a lovely, warm tropical night. As they walked past the reception area Sarah and Alexandria looked carefully around for any clues. They hadn’t seen any other numbers from the code and they had been checking all day.
‘Have you two lost something?’ Dad asked.
‘No, Dad,’ replied Alexandria.
‘You two have been acting very mysteriously for the last couple of days,’ said Mum.
‘We’re just checking something out Mum,’ replied Alex. ‘We’ll tell you when we find what we’re looking for. You’ll get a big surprise.’
They walked on to the restaurant. The waves were crashing gently on to the beach. The perfect end to the perfect day. The family all sat down at the restaurant and ordered their dinner. An announcement over the loud speaker asked the diners to plan an act and then see the compere for a chance to take part in the resort talent night, which started at 8pm.
‘We want everyone to take part,’ the voice said. Alexandria and Sarah decided they would enter and sing a song.
‘You’ll have to sing, Mum,’ said Alexandria,
‘You’ve got a great voice. You’re sure to win!’ At first Mum was hesitant, but when the compere came around to their table she was talked into it.
‘What will you be singing?’ Chris the compere asked. Mum decided to sing ‘Some Things Change’. Alexandria and Sarah decided to sing ‘Memory’ from their favourite musical, ‘Cats’, and even Dad was talked into doing an act. He announced he was going to sing, but he couldn’t say what.
‘At least you’re having a go, Dad,’ Alexandria exclaimed.
‘There’s lots of prizes to be won,’ Chris said, ‘so do your best. First prize is a breakfast at the resort restaurant and $100.’
‘Let’s try for that,’ Alexandria whispered to Sarah. ‘We could give it to Mum and Dad.’ Sarah nodded in agreement.
After dinner Chris announced there were twelve entrants to take part in the talent night. The first five entrants were asked to go up to the front of the room. Alexandria hoped everyone would not stare at her Mum when they went up to the front for their turn. Sometimes she felt a little embarrassed when people looked hard at her mother. Alexandria didn’t care if they stared once her mother started singing because she knew her Mum had such a good voice. Her mother used to take singing lessons and perform. Sometimes Alexandria thought people seemed surprised that her Mum could sing so well. Alex sometimes felt annoyed when she sensed people staring at her family when they went shopping together. Alexandria noticed older people, especially, seemed very interested in her Mum’s electric wheelchair. She secretly thought that they probably wanted to use it themselves as some of them walked slower than a snail and even looked like they could fall asleep on the spot. Alexandria thought they would have a lot of fun in the wheelchair. Maybe they were just envious.
The first act jolted Alexandria’s thoughts back to the concert. She had been thinking about the code. Maybe they should just forget it.
